Arizona Teachers Protest New Immigration Bills With a call for “Education, Not Deportation” a group of Arizona teachers and students showed up at the Arizona State Capitol to protest against Senate Bills 1611 and 1407. SB 1611 is an omnibus immigration bill proposed by Republican Senator Russell Pearce. If approved, children will be required to present documents to school administrators proving they are legal in the United States in order to register for school. This bill also will prevent undocumented students from attending Arizona community colleges and universities, even when they would be able to pay triple the regular tuition. Senate Bill 1407, if approved, would order teachers and school administrators to gather information regarding the immigration status of students attending their schools. Demonstrators and opponents of these bills consider them a potential violation of the Plyler v Doe decision, a 1982 Supreme Court decision which prohibits states from conditioning access to public education to children regardless of their immigration status.
