Chain Gang of Undocumented Immigrants
Pick Up Trash in Arizona| Phoenix, AZ | July 13, 2011
Controversial Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio -who bills himself as the "toughest sheriff in
America"- sent out to the streets a new chain gang made up entirely of undocumented immigrants
who have been convicted of drunken driving. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office
(MCSO), the new chain gang attempts to send a strong message about the hazards of driving
under the influence (DUI). Inmates who are part of the chain gang are immigrants living illegally in
the United States. They were previously arrested for driving a vehicle under the influence of
alcohol. All are serving sentences for DUI offenses committed while driving in Maricopa County. The
chain gang is made up of individuals who volunteered to be part of it. Inmates in this chain gang
are mostly immigrants from Latin America. Members of the chain gang were attired in pink t-shirts
with lettering indicating the crime they were convicted of (DUI), and were assigned to clean
littered or trashy areas in a large empty field near the airport, and at the border of the cites of
Phoenix and Tempe. Inmates are jailed in the county jail known as "Tent City". In Phoenix, where
this jail is located, temperatures are expected to soar to near 120 Fahrenheit degrees this summer.
"Tent City" houses 1,167 male and female inmates. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is 79-year-old and has been
in office since 1993. He has become famous for making inmates sleep in tents in the Arizona sun
and wear pink boxer shorts and shirts.
