Barriozona Remains an Autonomous Publication

HISTORY IS ABOUT TO CHANGE Grassroots Journalism
|

Phoenix, Arizona - Since its inception, Barriozona Magazine has been
an independent, autonomous magazine with no funding or
commercial advertising to fund its endeavor. This has given us the
flexibility and freedom to not be subjected to an economic or political
interest of any kind that may influence our mission and vision. We
have witnessed the twists that publications take when a political
nerve or an economic muscle has to be avoided for the sake of
staying in business or pleasing a big name individual or corporation.
Barriozona, therefore, does not have to serve or protect any
interests that may corrupt or divert the reason it came into
existence. Barriozona’s position will remain the same as long as it is
published.
Every once and a while, this concept has come under attack. Every
single time, we have demonstrated that an autonomous magazine
can thrive and grow without the traditional means of support and
funding other publications may need to just survive. The reason is
simple: our only and true interest is to serve the community by
publishing the amount of information our volunteer efforts allow us
to afford. Editorial decisions on what and what not to publish are
solely based on our editorial board, and on varied issues that may
be of interest to readers in general.
Our many readers can rest assured that this editorial line won’t be
customized to the wishes of ignorant minds that use harassment
and bullying to try to dictate our content. Autonomy and
independence in our editorial scope always reminds us that we are
not on anyone’s payroll to follow the wants and demands of
disoriented individuals that will do more benefit to the causes they
say they endorse by staying away from them. The who, what, when,
where, why and how have been and will continue to be in our
decisional latitude, not theirs.
Therefore, what you see and read in Barriozona —a quality,
interactive and easy to navigate website— is not the product of a
certified, high qualified webmaster or thousands of dollars’ budget. It
is the effort of those who, not knowing how, have taught themselves
to respond to the technological demands of our fast-paced society
and to serve the community with professionalism and appropieness.
To offer an Internet site that respects all readers and is easy on the
eyes, we have devoted uncountable volunteer hours without any
financial compensation to be competitive and, more than anything, to
have a humble yet proud space to share information –social, cultural,
political, and general– as an alternative to mainstream media.
We won’t yield to any pressure, to any interest, to any power, or to
any underlying obsession some seem to have with wanting
Barriozona to become paranoid and obsessed with a particular issue,
a trend, or a mental fixation. We have published topics that range
from healthcare, art, history, politics, immigration, to literature, folk
heroes, civil rights and culture. We feel that years of learning and
sacrifice and work in the community gives us the right to dictate our
editorial line. Therefore, we haven’t and we will not allow the
sporadic attacks of people that want our magazine to bend toward
their rude and unreasonable demands. Those who have harassed us
have seen, invariably, their own stubbornness backfire on them.
These are Barriozona’s tenants, very simple to understand. Most
people get it, some are trying, but some just won’t.
Our only and true interest is to
serve the community by publishing
the amount of information our
volunteer efforts allow us to afford.
