Usually, political campaigns in Mexico incorporate cultural elements that seek to have voters identify with
native symbols, such as the ones shown in the picture, where a man, dressed in native clothing blows a
sea shell, as Roberto Madrazo, the PRI's candidate, prepares to deliver his speech in Xochimilco
(ho-chee-MEEL-ko) the legendary suburb of floating gardens south of Mexico City.
In Mexico, just about any wall works as a strategic space for campaign propaganda. Some home and
business owners "rent" this kind of space to make some extra cash, and perhaps support their favorite
candidate. In the image, a Mexican family walks past a wall devoted to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador,
the PRD's candidate for president.
Michoacan (mee-cho-an-KAHN) is a state located in west central Mexico, and home state of Felipe
Calderon, the PAN's candidate for president -seen in the large campaign signs. In the image, a group of
native ladies observe another adding water to a big saucepan, as she prepares a traditional stew-like
Mexican dish.
