Phoenix, Arizona. June 9, 2010 - In one of his longest-planned yet unexpected adventures,
journalist and filmmaker Pedro Ultreras left New York City on Sunday, June 5, 2010 to head
toward South Africa and attend the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.
His original route was to depart from Newark Liberty International Airport, in New Jersey, and
arrive in Frankfurt, Germany. From Germany he would go to Nigeria and then to South Africa.
Everything went as planned up until he presented his passport to authorities at the O R
Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg's International Airport), where he heard the bad
news: in order to be allowed in the country, he needed to have at least two blank pages in his
American passport for entrance stamps.
Having travelled to more than 35 countries, his passport didn’t have a single blank page as
South African authorities require. Next thing he knew he was on his way back to Germany.
Even though Pedro Ultreras felt disheartened at the turn of events, he was able to obtain a
new passport in Germany—with plenty of blank pages to show to authorities back in South
Africa. The airline company put him back on a plane, this time to Istanbul, Turkey, where he
was going to catch a plane to South Africa.
Pedro Ultreras arrived today in Istanbul at night time. At 5:00 p.m. Arizona time, he is airborne
on his way to South Africa, where is expected to arrive on Thursday, June 10 about 8:00 a.m.
(about 11:00 p.m. still Wednesday, Arizona time.
Barriozona Magazine wishes Pedro Ultreras a successful admission to South Africa this time. If
everything goes as planned, he will be reporting for our readers from South Africa in this
special section called "Chronicles on the Move." Stay tuned. (The editor)
