Arizona's Sheriff Arpaio releases pink
underwear in Spanish | Phoenix, AZ | July 11, 2011
The controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio presented the Spanish version of the famous "Go Joe" pink
underwear that he makes his jails inmates wear. “Vamos Jose” is the message in Spanish printed
on the underwear. During a press conference at a Mexican food restaurant that supports the
sheriff, Joe Arpaio presented the Spanish-language version of the famous jail's pink underwear that
says "Vamos Jose", or "Go Joe". Restaurant’s patrons purchased pink boxers for a price of $15.00 U.
S. dollars. Arpaio autographed several of them. In 1995, when Maricopa County Sheriff Joe learned
that the inmates from the county jails his office oversees were stealing their jailhouse whites, he
ordered all the boxers to be dyed pink. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff Office (MCSO),
this measure helped improve the jails inventory. However, inmates began to steal the undershirts,
sheets, socks, and towels. Sheriff Arpaio proceeded to dyed everything pink, including handcuffs.
Inmates still wear the old fashioned black-and-white prison stripes. Joe Arpaio has been the sheriff
of Maricopa County since 1993. His jail policies and enforcement of local immigration laws have
brought him both support and opposition in Arizona and elsewhere in the United States. Proceeds
of the sales go to the MCSO’s Youth Assistance Foundation.
